– Kano-Niger Republic rail line for economic reasons, not political
Nigeria’s Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi has hinted that President Buhari will approve Port Harcourt – Maiduguri rail by next week.
Amaechi gave this hint on Independence Day while answering questions on Arise TV that was monitored by vista.ng.
He also said that Kano-Niger Republic rail line is for economic reasons and not political. The minister argued that since Niger Republic does not have a seaport, Buhari administration seeks to connect them to Nigeria’s Lagos seaport which makes an economic sense to Nigeria. He however said that the rail line will terminate at border town, Maradi.
“People ask about the commercial benefits of the Kano – Maradi rail line. With that line we can compete favourably with other coastal countries of West Africa in servicing the landlocked countries around us in the area of movement of cargoes, to make the Lagos seaports very viable, he said.
The minister further said that Secretary to Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha will add the rail line project to what the president will sign during Federal executive Meeting on Wednesday, next week.
He added that the rail line will emanate from Bonny Deep Seaport through Aba, Umuahia ,Enugu, Makurdi, Lafia, Kafanchan, Jos, Bauchi, Gombe, Damaturu and Maiduguri, with a spur from PH-Owerri.
He noted that what will be left PH- Maiduguri rail line will be Awka to Abakiliki.
Mr Amaechi hoped that Calabar – Lagos rail line will commence as well, “Lagos-Calabar is still on the table,” he said.
