A High Court in Port Harcourt has sentenced a second-year student of Physics department, University of Port Harcourt, Ifeanyi Dike and an accomplice Ugochukwu Nwamiro to death by hanging over the murder of an eight-year-old girl, Victory Chikamso Nmezuwuba in 2017.
Dike after being caught by a local vigilante group in the Eliozu in Port Harcourt with a bag containing the victims remains was handed Dike over to the police for further investigations who subsequently prosecuted him.
Recall that Dike, who dismembered the victim’s body with his cousin, Ugochukwu, escaped from the premises of the State Criminal Investigation Department, (SCID) owing to the complacency of one Sgt Johnbosco Okoronze who left him loose without a handcuff after documenting his statement. He was later rearrested in Jos and subsequently returned to Port Harcourt to face trial.
The trail Judge, Justice Adolphus Enebele, ruled that the prosecuting council were able to prove that the accused persons committed the offense and therefore sentenced them to death.
The police officer who aided Dike’s escape, Sergeant Johnbosco Okoronze was also found guilty and given one-year imprisonment.
