Socio-Economic Rights Accountability Project (SERAP) has written to FG telling it to refrain from making further cash payments to the poor and vulnerable in Nigeria. The body advised the government to use BVN in making transfers to the beneficiaries of conditional cash transfers and other programmes aimed at ameliorating the suffering of the most venerable individuals during the economic downturn occasioned by outbreak of coronavirus.
In a tweet released by body Sunday afternoon, also stated that it has sent two FoI request to FG to provide food and relief material to Nigerians as part of their human right.
The tweet reads:
“We’ve asked the Fed. Govt. & CBN to provide spending details on COVID-19 relief funds, donations & on school feeding, including updated list of beneficiaries of cash payments, cash transfers in Lagos, Ogun & Abuja; & to stop cash payments & pay people through the BVNs.”
“We said in two FoI requests sent yesterday: “Providing socio-economic benefits to the country’s poorest esp. at this time of COVID-19 is a matter of human rights & not charity. It’s critical to keeping people alive, addressing inequalities, improving public trust & integrity.”
