Socio-economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and Amnesty International have called on the Directorate of State Services (DSS) to release the lawyer who was detained on the order of Abia State Governor, Dr Okozie Ikpeazu.
The lawyer, Gabriel Emperor Ogbonna, was detained by DSS for calling for the probe of the Dr. Ikpeazu’s Abia State Government
SERAP called on President Buhari to demonstrate his commitment to the rule of law by stopping criminalization of peaceful expression in Nigeria and ensuring the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals detained or imprisoned for exercising their rights to freedom.
Amnesty International has, on the other hand, called on Abia State Governor and DSS to immediately and unconditionally release Barrister Ogbonna.
It is now left to be seen if DSS will heed the call of the human right groups and release Bar. Ogbonna whose health, according to his lawyer, is beginning to deteriorate in in detention.
