Rape of women, girls in Nigeria now endemic – Amnesty Int’l

Amnesty International has said that rape of women and girls is endemic in Nigeria.

The international human rights watchdog made this known in reaction to the recent reports of rape in the country, the latest being the tragic story of a young lady who was killed and murdered inside church premises in Edo State.

The group said that such incidences have persisted in the country because the state has failed to tackle entrenched discrimination against women.

It, therefore, called on the Nigerian government to urgently address the legal and social systems that tolerate rape and sexual violence on a wide scale.

“Rape of women and girls is endemic in Nigeria.

“It persists because the state has failed to tackle entrenched discrimination against women.

‘Authorities must urgently address the legal and social systems that tolerate rape and sexual violence on a wide scale.

“Largely, in Nigeria perpetrators of rape invariably escape punishment, and women and girls who have been raped are denied any form of redress for the serious crimes against them,’ AI wrote in its social media handle.
