Nigerians on social media are demanding the arrest and prosecution of Professor Alakija Salami of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital for admitting, treating and releasing the corpse of a COVID-19 patient who returned from UK.
The Teaching Hospital has earlier announced the suspension of the senior consultant for the unethical handling of the deceased patient.
In a statement put out by the hospital, it reads the management of University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital announced it has suspended Prof A.K. Salami as a senior consultant in the hospital.
The Hospital noted that this was as a result of his unethical conduct in the admission, management and eventual release of the corpse of a suspected COVID-19 patient who died in the hospital on the 3rd of April, 2020.
However, mere suspension of the professor is not going down well with Nigerians as they have taken to social media to call for the prosecution of the professor as was done in Funke Akindele’s case.
In a trending hashtag, #ArrestProfSalami, prominent people are throwing their weight behind the call.
One of the highlight of such call came from investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo who wrote:
“Funke Akindele organised a house party and was DESERVEDLY arrested, tried & sentenced in court.U nnecessary secrecy & unprofessionalism from a professor of medicine has already led to two COVID infections + risk to many, & you only want to suspend him?
