Report from the Nigerian Bureau for Statistics has revealed that about 82.9 million Nigerians now live in abject poverty. .
NBS in its 2019 Poverty and Inequality in Nigeria report released on Monday stated that the number, representing 40.09 per cent of the total population, survive on less than one United States dollar per day, statistics have shown.
The NBS, in conjunction with the World Bank deployed the Nigerian Living Standards Survey to measure poverty and living standards between September of 2018 and October of 2019.
The yardstick that was used by the report to measure absolute poverty is the number of people that can afford essentials like shelter, food and clothing with the exclusion of Borno State which has been submerged by Boko Haram insurgency.
Out of the total reported, 52.10 per cent are in rural area while urban centres has 18.04 per cent.
