Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has given Nigeria’s 36 Governors ultimatum to make public their COVID-19 spending details within seven days.
The group, in a statement released on Sunday morning, also asked the Governors to channel the monies budgeted for security votes and life pension for ex-governors to funding of public healthcare facilities, education and palliatives to the poor.
“We said in FoI requests sent yesterday: ‘It would be a betrayal of your oath of office to continue to receive security votes & pay life pension. Given the rising no. of deaths in Kano reportedly due to COVID-19, govs now have to show leadership, transparency & accountability,” the group said.
SERAP has been at the forefront of COVID-19 accountability advocacy since the outbreak of the virus in Nigeria. It had in the past called on the government to put some measures towards ensuring transparency in its interventions.
