The leader of All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hailed President Buhari as a man of integrity and honesty who worked to see June 12 become a ‘Democracy Day’.
The former Governor of Lagos State in a press statement released on Thursday evening commended President Buhari for the courage to make June 12 a Democracy Day despite the opposition encountered.
According to the APC leader, ”Here, I must commend President Buhari for having the political courage to make June 12 Democracy Day. It would have been easier to let things stay as they were. But President Buhari, himself a man of integrity and honesty, realised the import of June 12 and understood that this day more than any other best symbolized our national pursuit of democracy. Despite political opposition, President Buhari helped set the record straight by making today, June 12, Democracy Day.”
Tinubu went further to hail other people like late Dr. Beko Ransome Kuti, late Gani Fawehinmi, Baba Omojola, late Pa Rewane, late Pa Enahoro, Baba Ajasin, Pa Adesanya, Baba Adebanjo, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, Femi Falana, student activists and other civil society groups who fought hard to enthrone democracy
On June 12 1993, Nigerians came out and participated in a presidential elections which was contested by Moshood Abiola from Southern Nigeria and Bashir Tofa from Northern Nigeria.
The election which was wildly acclaimed to be the freest and fairest election ever conducted in Nigeria saw Chief Abiola emerge winner but was annulled by the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida thereby throwing the country into crisis.
