The Nigerian government is considering the implementation of a policy that will make the wearing of masks compulsory to curb the spread of COVID- 19.
This hint was given by the DG of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu during the daily COVID- 19 periodic press briefing on Tuesday.
Ihekweazu stated that the NCDC is not unaware that the World Health Organization is against the use of masks by non health personnel. He, however, hinted that the federal government is monitoring the Nigerian situation and may be forced to implement a national strategy on mask wearing to contain the virus.
“This is a strategy we need to think about before we implement it. Before we implement a national strategy around mask wearing, we have to be sure we can provide it or at least enable access to it. We will allow for the risk assessment and as the evidence comes together, we will make a decision based on the evidence and ability to provide every Nigerian with access to mask,”
