The inspector General of Police, Muhamed Adamu has warned officers under the employ of the Nigerian Police Force to desist from checking people’s personal gadgets like phones and laptops.
The police chief who spoke in a press conference on Wednesday also warned his men to desist for profiling Nigerians to ascertain if they are internet fraudsters referred to as “Yahoo boys”.
“The issue of any Police unit going to look into people’s phones, which is supposed to be their private property, or looking at the type of vehicle they‘re using, or profiling them to see whether they‘re yahoo boys or not. That era is gone. It is not acceptable,” Adamu warned.
The police force in the country has come under serious scrutiny after series of protests broke out in many states owing to what the protesters described as police brutality.
