There was a mixture of despondence and air of helplessness amongst health workers in the Accident and Emergency Department of ESUT Teaching Hospital, Enugu owing to what has be described as indifference attitude of management over the outbreak of coronavirus in the state.
The state’s number one health institution, popularly referred to as Parklane Hospital, is the only teaching hospital in Enugu metropolis. This has made it almost a first point of call for patients who need emergency medical attention.
Our correspondent who visited the hospital observed that there were no working protocols designed to make A&E department safe for patients and health workers in readiness to a potential case of COVID-19.
“The same way we were working before invasion of coronavirus pandemic is the same way we still work. The department is congested, We fear for our lives, we don’t know what tomorrow holds for us,” one health worker said.
A couple of health workers who pledged anonymity said, that there was nothing like social distancing as the hospital management do not really consider it sacrosanct. They alleged that the management are sabotaging the efforts of the state government is combating the virus.
