Buhari to commission Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri rail line after 33 years of construction

All is set for President Muhammadu Buhari’s commissioning of the much talked about Itakpe – Ajaokuta-Warri rail road tomorrow.

In a tweet from the from the President’s Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina on Monday, Presidency revealed that passengers will start using the rail route immediately after the flag off.

His tweet reads: “President Buhari Tuesday commissions Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri Rail Project, and Flag-off of Commercial Train Services. PMB strikes again!”

The first contract to build the central line, a standard gauge railway to connect the iron ore deposits at Itakpe to the Ajaokuta Steel Mill and the Atlantic Ocean port of Warri was awarded in 1987.

The railway was originally planned for completion in five years, but epileptic funding elongated the period of construction to over 30 years
