Baring drastic turn of events, the People’s Democratic Party looks (PDP) set to dump its 2019 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar for new option in 2023.
Source close to the party revealed that forces supporting the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal to emerge as presidential candidate are gathering momentum even as the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, is highly favoured to be given the nod to contest as vice presidential candidate.
Tambuwal was highlight favoured to be the party’s flagbaerer in 2019 but caved in after a wave of political manoeuvering by associates of the former Vice President. This did not go down well with Wike who stormed out of the presidential primaries in Port Harcourt having devoted huge material and human resources to ensuring his Sokoto counterpart was victorious.
Another source close to the Rivers State Governor claimed Tambuwal Saturday’s visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo was a strategic move to win his support as early as possible, the latter having supported Atiku in the last general elections.
The Tambuwal/Wike block are also strategizing on how to ensure Uche Secondus is retained as the National Chairman of the party so as to consolidate its structure. The camp may, however, face stiff opposition as a lot of state governors are still loyal to the former Vice President and will do all in their capacity to ensure he is returned as the party’s candidate come 2023.
Atiku is also said to be throwing his weight behind the party’s candidate in the Edo and Ondo Governorship Elections in the bid to win their loyalties in time for the 2023 contest
