President Muhammadu Buhari has given a 12 months ultimatum to the military regime in Mali which is headed by Col. Assimi Goita to conduct elections and hand over to a civilian government.
The President gave this ultimatum at ECOWAS meeting held in Abuja on Friday.
President Buhari also called for immediate release of senior government officials held by the junta without any pre-conditions.
Recall that on 18th of August,2020, Col. Assimi Goita conducted a mutiny that ousted the former president, Ibrahim Baubacar Keita.
The US trained Col. Assimi after the coup said that it was an act of patriotism that put the Malian people first.
Mali was thrown into crisis after Ibrahim Baubacar Keita was confirmed for another term in office after seven years in power.
President Buhari, who thanked former president Goodluck Jonathan for the role he played in bringing peace to the country, advised the regime to do the things recommend by ECOWAS in order to enjoy the cooperation and collaboration of regional and international community, and to allow the easing of sanctions imposed on Mali.
